Short description

Lesson about favorite food and money. Learners to listen to podcasts and answer quiz questions, and some role plays around this subject.


Development of the tool

Idea/Concept/why you choose to develop this tool

Help learners develop their basic English to be able to talk about favorite meals and food. To be able to understand conversations about food and money related to that topic. Improve their knowledge and vocabulary and grammar when talking about the subject.

Tools and methods used for development

Podcasts (MP4 files)  Pod casts are good way of carrying out Individual work. They are very short files which allows learners to listen to them as many times as they like and practice the language while listening.  It provides very clear pronunciation which helps them to improve their spoken skills.

Google forms quizzes: Google quizzes are good way of measuring the learning. It helps the leaner to reflect on their work as well as test their knowledge.

Feedback: to achieve feedback it’s good to carry out work in group sessions or other way of saying is peer to peer learning.  Peer to peer learning helps learners to work in a group, explore ideas and it helps to improve their work because they get the feedback from their peer straight away. Peer learning is good exercise but we have bear in mind it might work for some but on the other hand it might be too much for some learners as they like their own time and space.

Role plays: to practice your vocabulary and listening skills it’s good to carry out the role plays because it helps learners with speaking and listening skills. It gives them the opportunity to hear other accents.  It also helps them with learning new words and what they mean. we used menu and provided following information on GD for them to follow. The topic chosen were Food and Money.  The menu was used to create an exercise using instruction, Podcast, question/answers and transcript.  In the money role play, instructions and question/answer were used to practice their skills. By providing physical resources helps learner with their confidence in the class and outside.

 

Resources involved in development (people, equipment etc)

Laptop: laptops, tablets, smartphones play important part with the development of resources. Without these equipment’s, none of the resources are useful.  Having internet is also essential part of using these items.  Having laptop during the lesson helps the tutor to showcase her work through on-line and offer other learning opportunities.

Podcasts (MP4 file) is a digital audio or video file or recording.  The script can be recorded and listened to over and over.  The same exercise could be done several times until the learner feels confident to move on to the next phase. Podcast use is very wide across all platforms.

SoundCloud is a global online audio distribution platform, that enables its users to upload, record, promote, and share their originally-created sounds.

Google forms quizzes: Google quizzes are good way of measuring the learning. It helps the leaner to reflect on their work as well as test their knowledge. Trainer or tutor can create quizzes in Google to help learners to check their work.                                  1 staff member

Google documents: Create and share your work online and access your documents from anywhere. Manage documents, spreadsheets, presentations and surveys. The Instructions and the transcript of the exercise could be uploaded for learners to access as well.  The documents could be edited and tutor could add comments for learners to see how well they did.  It is very good and used sharing platform.  PDF presentation can also be uploaded for learners to access any information related to their topics.

Though it is a platform but staff members play key role in producing all the material which can be uploaded for leaners to access. Staff members/tutor have a responsibility to produce scheme of work, lesson plans and make sure it is suitable to learner’s needs.

Use of the tool

Didactic analysis of the tool

Google Drive (GD) is a file storage and synchronization service created by Google. It allows users to store files in the cloud, share files, and edit documents, spreadsheets, and presentations with collaborators. GD encompasses Google Docs, Sheets, forms and Slides, an office suite that permits collaborative editing of documents, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings, forms, and more.

GD offers 15GB free online storage. All the files in GD can be reached from any smartphone, tablet, or computer from anywhere and the only thing needed is Internet connection. It is very useful tool in the education sphere because you can quickly invite other users to view, download, and collaborate on all the files you want.

All the students and learners could access the files either from home or from the language centre/school.

In the lesson GD was very much used as a tool to share files and a collaboration area in form of quiz set up in Google forms. The learners could access the files at anytime and at their own pace. The teacher could check learning by analysing the answers in the google forms quizzes.


Technical analysis of the tool

The files need to be set to view only if you do not want them edited. The files are not backed up so it is advisable to have a copy saved somewhere else in case of losing all the data in GD.

Learners need to have access to GD and know how to use it.
